Shipping Industry Flag State Performance Table

The Isle of Man ranked in the top three of the table.

The table summarises factual information available in the public domain that is helpful in assessing the performance of flag states.

The Round Table of international shipping associations - BIMCO, INTERCARGO, INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER OF SHIPPING, INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING FEDERATION and INTERTANKO - believe it is essential that standards of safety, environmental and social performance are maintained and enforced by flag states, in full compliance with international maritime regulations. This updated flag state performance table is produced to help the international shipping industry contribute to this objective.

Paris Port State Control MOU
The Paris MOU (memorandum of Understanding) published its 2006 Lists in June 2007. This list reflects the performance of flag states in terms of the numbers of ships detained in port against the number of ships visiting. The lists cover 80 flags divided into three categories: a Black List for the worst-performing flags, a Grey List for those in the middle and a White List of the best performing flags.

The Isle of Man was placed in the top ten of the White List.

These results are the outcome of an independent external assessment of the real quality and performance of the Isle of Man Fleet and is the "best comparative measure" available.

Being high on the White List means that Manx ships are likely to be less troubled by port state control inspections in Paris MOU ports than ships on the Grey or Black Lists and this means they are able to carry on their business as freely as possible. A position on the White List also enhances the reputation of the IoM as a high quality flag and this in turn encourages more quality operators to place their ships on the IoM flag.
